Report Tues 25th March
Nantwich Town 0 Cammell Laird 2
Well how timely this was??
As
sixteen year olds around the country are
sitting their mock exams, Lairds and Nantwich
staged their 'mock' FA Vase semi!!!
Nothing was to be taken for granted by either
side. Lairds hit by several injuries to
key players, and Nantwich not wanting to
be intimidated by Lairds' form of late.
It was Nantwich who came out running, having
the best of play in the opening 20 minutes.
On 10 minutes they had the ball in the back
of the net for it to be disallowed for a
foul on Lairds keeper John Gillies.
Lairds were frustrated in front of goal,
most chances hitting the cars in the car
park rather than the net. Ronnie Morgan
just missed out on slipping one in as his
outstretched foot just failed to reach the
ball before the goalie grabbed it.
Lairds management team made a few adjustments
to the midfield towards the end of the half
and it paid off!
Taking the game to The Dabbers, Lairds were
playing the ball around and it looked good
for the second half!
On the hour mark Jamie McGuire found himself
in the box with the keeper to beat, before
he could strike he was unceremoniously brought
down in a heap. Jamie himself stepped up
to take the penalty. Despite the entire
youth population of Nantwich legging behind
the goal to distract!!, Jamie put it away
cleanly to give The Battleships a deserved
lead.
From then on in it was Lairds all the way,
Eddie Jebb beavering away on the right wing,
Ronnie...well he was just being Ronnie ...always
in for a chance!!! and sub Ian Cooke masterful
in the air as ever.
In the 80th minute Cookie himself just shot
over from a pinpoint Ronnie Morgan cross,
a few minutes later jamie McGuire launched
a thunderous shot across goal just wide.
All was settled just before the final whistle
when Ronnie knocked a sweet pass through
to Ian Cooke for him to slam home from a
yard out!! 2-0 to The Mighty Lairds!!!
So all in all a fine confidence booster
for Lairds ahead of the biggy in just over
a weeks time.
