Match Report Sat 18th
March
Cammell Laird 5 Flixton 0
Both
teams entered this Moore & Co Solicitors
North West Counties Football League Challenge
Cup semi final with aspirations of a treble
winning season. Lairds of course chasing
the FA Vase and First Division Championship,
with Flixton in the semis of the Division
Two Trophy but somewhat languishing behind
Division Two big shots FC United in their
quest for promotion to the top division.
Injury
hit Lairds were not at a phased by Flixton’s
stunning midweek away win at FC United and
quickly took hold of the game with Anthony
Sheehan netting in the 12th minute.
Flixton’s confidence was not too badly
dented though and in the 18th minute they
had a shot go wide of John Gillies' post.
Straight from the goal kick, Lairds took
the ball to the other end of the pitch and
Stuart Wright had no problem getting number
two!
Lairds were now in control of the game and
passed the ball around slickly, this culminated
in the merciless Rocket Ronnie smashing
home his 41st goal of the season to make
it 3-0 to The Battleships.
Ronnie was on hand again just before the
break to send Lairds in with a comfortable
4-0 advantage.
The second half was a quieter affair; Lairds
still have a potential 22 games to squeeze
into the last 6 weeks of the season so it
would have been foolhardy to keep up the
pressure of the first half.
John Couch, so unlucky in front of goal
at Abbey Hey last week grabbed himself a
welcome goal on 67 minutes to seal the match…
and possibly the tie at 5-0 to Lairds.
That score remained until the final whistle
but not before Ronnie Morgan poleaxed Barrie
George in the Flixton with a thunderous
shot!!!
Lairds go to Flixton for the away leg next
Saturday (25th) and should be confident
of reaching the final at Bury FC and so
keep up their hopes of becoming the first
club to retain the League Challenge Cup.
